Abstract:
Objective To investigate the correlation between the ratio of arch depth(D) to distance(H) of physiological curvature of cervical spondylosis and median frequency(MF) of the surface electromyography(EMG) of upper band of trapezius muscle and sternocleidomastoid muscle on the pain side.
Methods The anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the cervical spine and MF of surface EMG values of the upper bundle of sternocleidomastoid muscle and trapezius muscle on the pain side in 20 healthy people(control group) and 50 cervical spondylosis patients with unilateral neck pain were detected. The Pearson correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between D/H and MF parameters of the surface EMG values of upper band of trapezius muscle and sternocleidomastoid muscle on the pain side.
Results Compared with the healthy control group, the physiological curvature levels in the healthy control group, physiological curve straightening group and physiological curve angulation group gradually declined (P < 0.01).The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that the D/H was positively correlated with MF of surface EMG values of sternocleidomastoid muscle and trapezius muscle on the pain side (r=0.847, 0.811, P < 0.01).
Conclusions The measurement of cervical muscle fatigue in surface EMG can be used as a noninvasive and convenient method to evaluate the patients with cervical spondylosis. The evaluation of surface EMG of neck muscle can provide a guidance in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cervical spondylosis in the future.
