Analysis of discipline development planning in college and university based on ESI and InCites database——Bengbu Medical College as an example

ObjectiveTo analyze the development of various disciplines in Bengbu Medical College and provide theoretical basis and data support for discipline construction and development planning.

MethodsThe Web of Science (WOS) documents, Essential Science Indicators (ESI) disciplines and potential disciplines of Bengbu Medical College from 2010 to 2020 were statistically analyzed using ESI and InCites database.

ResultsA total number of 1 689 WOS documents were published by Bengbu Medical College from 2010 to 2020, the total citation frequency was 13 009, the citation frequency of each paper was 7.70, and 7 documents were highly cited.The total number of WOS documents was increasing year by year, and the category normalized citation impact of WOS documents in 2010 was more than 1, which exceeded the global average level.The clinical medicine of Bengbu Medical College ranked in the global top 1% of ESI.The distribution of the first authors of WOS documents in ESI discipline was relatively scattered, the influence factors of published journals were mostly in the range of 1-3, and the influence of cooperative documents, especially international cooperation documents was generally high.Among the ESI potential disciplines, "pharmacology and toxicology" had the highest potential value, which was the most likely to enter the top 1% of ESI in the future.

ConclusionsThe overall scientific research level of Bengbu Medical College is gradually strengthened.We should further strengthen the balanced development of various disciplines, optimize the allocation of resources, improve the quality of documents, encourage scientific research cooperation, speed up the disciplines construction, and promote the rapid development of the school's double first-class construction.
