Marriage and procreation status of epilepsy patients of Zhuang nationality in Guangxi province

    • Objective: To investigate the marriage and procreation condition of epilepsy patients of Zhuang nationality in Guangxi and to analyze the influencing factors. Methods: Sixty epilepsy patients of Zhuang nationality in Guangxi province were selected as the epilepsy group and 60 healthy subjects were randomly selected as the control group at the same period. The questionnaire survey method was adopted to investigate the marriage status, family situation, personal income and epilepsy disease of all the subjects;and regression analysis was used to analyze the related factors affecting their marital status. Results: The average marrying age of both the male and female in the epilepsy group was higher than that in the control group(P<0.05 and P<0.01);the marriage and fertility rates of the male in the epilepsy group were obviously lower than those in the control group (P<0.05), but the marriage and fertility rates of the female had no statistical differences between the two groups(P>0.05). The health situation of the children showed that the control group had 1 case of congenital atrial septal defect and the epilepsy group 1 case of congenital cleft lip, which had no statistical significant difference(P>0.05). The number of married epilepsy patients who had a junior high school or above education background(P<0.01) and a monthly income of over 2 000 yuan was higher than that of the unmarried (P<0.01);the medical expense had no difference between the two groups(P>0.05). The average onset age of the married people was higher than that of the unmarried (P<0.01), and the course of the disease was obviously shorter than that of the unmarried (P<0.01);the epilepsy seizures, syndrome types and duration of the epilepsy seizures of the married and unmarried people had no significant differences (P>0.05), but the frequency of epileptic seizures had significant differences (P<0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that gender, age of onset, income, educational level, course of the disease and frequency of epileptic seizures were all factors affecting the epilepsy patients' marriage situation(P<0.01). Conclusions: The marriage rate and fertility rate of the male epilepsy patients of Zhuang nationality in Guangxi province are markedly lower than those of the healthy control;and gender, age of onset, income, education degree, course and frequency of epileptic seizures are all closely related to the marital status of the epilepsy patients.
