Effect of dexmedetomidine on the levels of S100β protein and neuron specific enolase in removal of intracranial hematoma patients

    • Objective: To investigate the effects of dexmedetomidine on the levels of S100β protein and neuron specific enolase(NSE) in removal of intracranial hematoma patients. Methods: Forty patients scheduled by removal of intracranial hematoma were randomly divided into the dexmedetomidine group(group D) and control group(group C)(20 cases each group). In group D,the 10 mL/h(4 μg/mL) of dexmedetomidine was continuously infused by pump before 10 min of anesthesia, and stopped until the end of operation, and then the 2 mL/h(6 μg/mL) of dexmedetomidine was infused by vein for 48 h after the surgery. In group C the same volume of saline was infused. The anesthesia method, induction and maintenance in two groups were the same. The levels of S100β protein and neuron specific enolase before the dexmedetomidine infusing(T0),the end of operation(T1),and after 6 h(T2),12 h(T3),24 h(T4),36 h(T5) and 48 h(T6) of operation in two groups were detected by ELISA.Results: Compared with the T0,the levels of plasma S100β protein and NSE in group D decreased significantly from T1 to T6(P<0.01),the differences of the plasma S100β protein in group C from T1 to T6 were not statistically significant(P>0.05),but the levels of NSE in group C from T2 to T6 increased significantly(P<0.01).The levels of S100β protein and NSE in group D from T1 to T6 were significantly lower than those in group C(P<0.01).Conclusions: The dexmedetomidine can effectively reduce the levels of the S100β protein, and alleviate the brain injury in removal of intracranial hematoma patients
