The correlation of serum ferritin with brain edema after intracerebral hemorrage

    • Objective: To study the correlation of serum ferritin with brain edema after intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH).Methods: Thirty-six patients with ICH and 30 healthy volunteers were divided into observation group and control group, respectively. The levels of 24 hours serum ferritin in two groups were detected, and the head of the observation group were reexamined in the third day. Results: The level of serum ferritin in observation group(307.91±48.87)μg/Lwas significantly higher than that in control group(116.52±46.81)μg/Lafter 24 hours of onset(P<0.01).The level of hematoma volume declined in the third days than within 12 hours, but the relative edema volume and absolute edema volume were more than twelve hours of admisson(P<0.05).The level of serum ferritin was not correlation with the relative edema volume within 12 hours of admission(P>0.05),but the level of serum ferritin was positively related to the relative edema volume at the third day of admission(P<0.01).Conclusions: The level of serum ferritin can be used as an evaluation item in the diagnosis of brain edema.
