Significance of the combined determination of serum lactate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase in lung cancer

    • Objective: To investigate the clinical application value of the combined detection of serum lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Methods: Forty-five patients with locally advanced or metastatic lung cancer were investigated, and 45 healthy physical examination people were set as the control group. The serum levels of LDH and SOD in lung cancer patients and healthy people were detected using Beckman Coulter AU5800 automatic biochemistry analyzer, and the changes of LDH and SOD between before and after chemotherapy in lung cancer patients were evaluated. Results: Compared with healthy control group, the level of LDH and SOD in lung cancer patients increased and decreased, respectively, and the differences of those were statistically significant(P<0.01).In lung cancer patients, the serum LDH was negatively associated with serum albumin level(P<0.05);the serum SOD was negatively associated with tumor stage(P<0.01),and the serum SOD was positively associated with the serum albumin level(P<0.05).The serum levels of LDH and SOD in lung cancer patients were negatively correlated before treatment(P<0.05).After two cycles of chemotherapy, the effect of chemotherapy was both positively correlated with the decrease of LDH and increase of SOD(P<0.05). Conclusions: The combined monitoring of the serum levels of LDH and SOD in patients may have a certain clinical significance in the diagnosis, assessment and efficacy evaluation of lung cancer.
