Investigation of the iodine nutritional status of children and pregnant women before and after edible salt iodine decreasing in Bengbu city

    • Objective:To investigate the iodine nutritional status of children and pregnant women before and after edible salt iodine decreasing in Bengbu city, and provide the basis for scientific supplementing iodine and preventing iodine deficiency disease. Methods:Eight to ten years old school-age children and pregnant women in Bengbu were investigated before and after edible salt iodine decreasing. The iodine level of morning urine was detected using the WS/T107-2006 urine iodine of arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometry method. The iodine content of salt was detected using GB/T13025.7 direct titration method. Results:In 2012 and 2014,the qualified rates of iodine salt in Bengbu were 95.84% and 98.43%,respectively,and the consumption rate of qualified iodine salt were 95.51% and 98.38%,respectively.The urinary iodine median in 8 to 10 years old school-age children and pregnant women before and after iodine decreasing were 307.6 μg/L,219.6 μg/L and 264.5 μg/L,182.9 μg/L in Bengbu, respectively. The urinary iodine median in 8 to 10 years old school-age children and pregnant women after iodine decreasing significantly decreased compared with before iodine decreasing(P<0.01).Conclusions:The urinary iodine level in 8 to 10 years old school-age children decreases after edible salt iodine decreasing, the urinary iodine median still exceeds normal, and the excessive iodine intake in children is found. Before and after edible salt iodine decreasing, the urinary iodine median in pregnant women is normal, and the insufficient iodine intake in pregnant women is found.
