Application effect of the protective motivation theory on self-management behavior of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    • Objective:To investigate the application effects of the protective motivation theory on self-management behavior of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods:One hundred and twenty patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into the control group(62 cases) and experiment group(58 cases each group). The control group was taught with conventional health theory, and the experiment group was taught with the health theory based on protective motivation theory. The blood glucose level and body mass index in two groups were analyzed after intervention. The self-management ability and quality of life in two groups were evaluated using the self-management behavior questionnaire and quality of life scale. Results:After 3 months of intervention, the levels of fasting blood glucose, postprandial 2h blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin and body mass index in experiment group were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.01).The total score of self-management behavior scale and each dimension score in experiment group were significantly higher than those in control group(P<0.01),and the difference of the regular exercise score between two groups was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusions:The health education based on the protective motivation theory is conducive to control the level of the blood glucose and body mass index, and improve the self-management ability and the quality of life of patients.
