    The correlation between the corrected serum sodium level and illness severity in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis

    • Objective:To discuss the correlation between the corrected serum sodium level and illness severity in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis(DKA).Methods:The clinical data of 134 patients with DKA were retrospectively analyzed.According to the corrected serum sodium level,the patients were divided the group G1(corrected Na level>150 mmol/L),group G2(135 mmol/L ≤ corrected Na level<150 mmol/L),group G3(125 mmol/L ≤ corrected Na level <135 mmol/L) and group G4(corrected Na level < 125 mmol/L).The plasma osmotic pressure,blood glucose,incidence rate of low blood pressure shock,incidence rate of consciousness disturbance,pH value of artery blood and HCO3- levels in all groups were compared.Results:Among G2,G3 and G4 groups,with the decreasing of the corrected serum sodium level,the plasma osmotic pressure,arterial blood pH and concentration of HCO3- gradually decreased,and the level of blood glucose gradually increased(P<0.01).But the incidence rates of blood pressure shock and disturbance of consciousness did not shon statistical difference(P>0.05).There was no statistical significance in levels of blood glucose,arterial blood pH and concentration of HCO3- between group G1 and group G3(P>0.05).Two cases died in group G1,and no death case was found in other groups.With the corrected serum sodium level decreasing in group G1,the blood glucose gradually decreased,and the concentration of HCO3- gradually increased(P<0.01).Conclusions:The corrected sodium level can be used as a tool to evaluate illness severity in DKA patient with high sodium level.
