Objective To analyze the correlation between parenting style and humanistic care ability of nursing college students.
Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 444 undergraduate nursing students in a medical college in Xianyang using general information questionnaire, caring ability scale and Chinese version of simplified parenting style scale.
Results The total score of humanistic care ability of 444 nursing students was(187.83±19.89), and the scores of cognition, courage and patience were significantly lower than that of international norm(P < 0.01).The differences of the scores of humanistic care ability among the nursing students with different ages, grades, one-child status, family location, and relationship with parents were not statistically significant(P>0.05), and the differences of the score of humanistic care ability of different sex nursing students were statistically significant(P < 0.01).The results of correlation analysis showed that the humanistic care ability of nursing students was positively correlated with the emotional warmth of their parents(P < 0.01), and negatively correlated with the parental rejection(P < 0.01).The dimensions of caring ability, cognition, courage and patience were positively correlated with parents' emotional warmth(P < 0.05 to P < 0.01), and negatively correlated with the rejection of parents(P < 0.05 to P < 0.01).The cognition was positively correlated with the overprotection of father(P < 0.05), and the courage was negatively correlated with the overprotection of father(P < 0.01).The differences of the scores of the paternal emotional warmth, maternal emotional warmth and maternal rejection between high and low caring ability student were statistically significant(P < 0.05 to P < 0.01).
Conclusions The humanistic care ability of nursing students is correlated with the parenting style, and the emotional warmth of parenting can promote the improvement of humanistic care ability of nursing students.
