Analysis of correlation between HbA1c and fasting blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with microcytic anemia

    • ObjectiveTo explore the value of glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) level in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with microcytic anemia.
MethodsThe levels of HbA1c, FPG, Hb and MCV in 34 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with microcytic anemia(microcytic anemia group), 34 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with normocytic anemia(normocytic anemia group), 48 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated without anemia(simple type 2 DM group) and 68 healthy people(healthy control group) were detected. The correlation between HbA1c and FPG was analyzed.
ResultsThe differences of the levels of HbA1c, FPG, Hb and MCV among four groups were statistically significant(P < 0.01).The HbA1c level was positive correlation with FPG in normocytic anemia group and single type 2 DM group(r=0.708, r=0.773, P < 0.05), but the HbA1c level was not correlation with FPG in microcytic anemia group(r=0.302, P>0.05).
ConclusionsThe HbA1c level in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with microcytic anemia can not accurately reflect the real level of blood glucose.
