Analysis of the etiology and efficacy of infectious endophthalmitis

    • ObjectiveTo investigate the etiology and efficacy of infectious endophthalmitis (IE).
MethodsThe data of 130 patients with IE in a hospital from 2008 to 2020 were investigated, and the clinical characteristics of patients with different etiologies and related factors affecting the curative effect were analyzed.
ResultsA total of 100 cases of exogenous endophthalmitis (ExE) and 30 cases of endogenous endophthalmitis (EnE) were enrolled.ExE was predominant in both male and female patients.ExE was mainly found in nonages and young adults, and EnE was mainly found in the elderly.Ninety percent of EnE patients were complicated with systemic diseases, mainly including diabetes mellitus, liver abscess and hypertension. The detection rate of pathogenic bacteria was 18.46%, 36.67% in EnE, which was higher than 13.00% in ExE (P < 0.01).The main pathogens were Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus, etc.The cure and improvement rates were 63.1% and 36.9%, respectively. The cure rate of IE in patients aged ≤ 60 years, exogenous, without systemic disease, and without liver abscess was higher than that in patients aged >60 years, endogenous, with systemic disease, and with liver abscess (P < 0.05 to P < 0.01).
ConclusionsThe cure rate of IE is low, and the etiology is complicated. The treatment should be combined with the factors affecting the curative effect and pay attention to the pertinence.
