Mediating effect of social support on the regulatory emotional self-efficacy and emotional problem behavior of left-behind adolescents in the rural area

    • ObjectiveTo explore the mediating effect of social support on regulatory emotional self-efficacy and emotional problem behavior of left-behind adolescents in the rural area.
MethodsA total of 220 rural left-behind adolescents were investigated using general demographic questionnaire, regulatory emotional self-efficacy scale(RESE), social support rating scale and emotional problem behavior questionnaire. The relationship among regulatory emotional self-efficacy, social support, emotional problem behavior and the mediating effect of social support were analyzed using Pearson correlation and structural equation.
ResultsThe regulatory emotional self-efficacy was negatively correlated with the emotional problem behavior(β=-0.25, P < 0.01);the regulatory emotional self-efficacy was positively correlated with social support(β=0.60, P < 0.01);social support was negatively correlated with the emotional problem behavior(β=-0.45, P < 0.01).Social support played a complete mediating role, with a mediating effect value of -0.27.
ConclusionsSocial support is the key element to reduce the emotional problem behavior of rural left-behind adolescents. It is necessary to strengthen emotional communication and support perception so as to help them reduce their emotional problem behavior when implementing the intervention to improve the left behind adolescents' regulatory emotional self-efficacy.
