Correlation analysis of affective temperament and cognitive function in patients with bipolar disorder

    • ObjectiveTo study the relationship of affective temperament and cognitive function in patients with bipolar disorder.
MethodsSeventy-two patients with bipolar disorder who met the ICD-10 clinical diagnostic criteria from June 2020 to June 2021 were selected as the observation group. At the same time, other 75 community volunteers were selected randomly as control group. The affective temperament and the cognitive function of the two groups were evaluated through the temperament evaluation of memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire self rating scale (TEMPS-A) and Montreal congnitive assessment scale (MoCA), respectively.
ResultsAll factors scores of affective temperament in patients with bipolar disorder were higher than those in control group (P < 0.01), and the scores of visual space and executive function, attention, memory and cognitive total score were lower than those in control group (P < 0.05 to P < 0.01).The cyclothymic temperament were positively correlated with visual space and executive function, memory and cognitive total scores (P < 0.01), irritable temperament and hyperthymic temperament were positively correlated with language (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05).Stepwise regression analysis showed that, the visual space and executive function score of patients with bipolar disorder were taken as dependent variables, and cyclothymic temperament, age and educational level were taken as independent variables. The results showed that the educational level and cyclothymic temperament could explain 14.5% and 13.7% of the variation in visual space and executive function scores, respectively (P < 0.01).The memory score of patients with bipolar disorder was as a dependent variable, and cyclothymic temperament, age and disease duration were as the independent variables, age and cyclothymic temperament could explain 30.4% and 5.3% of the variation of the memory scores, respectively (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05).The total cognitive score of patients with bipolar disorder was taken as the dependent variable, and the cyclothymic temperament, age, education level and duration of disease were taken as the independent variables, age and cyclothymic temperament could explain 27.3% and 6.8% of the variation of the total cognitive score, respectively (P < 0.01).
ConclusionsThere is a correlation between affective temperament and cognitive function in patients with bipolar disorder, especially the cyclothymic temperament may be as the protective factor of the cognitive function of patients with bipolar disorder.
