    Effects of personality advantage of undergraduate nursing students on academic performance: multiple mediating effects of negative life event, social support and time management

    • Objective To study the effects of personality advantage, negative life event, social support and time management on the academic performance of undergraduate nursing students and its mechanism.
      Methods A total of 1 300 nursing students from five nursing undergraduate schools in Anhui province were investigated by general information sheet, Chinese advantage questionnaire, adolescent self-rated negative life event scale, adolescent time management tendency scale and social support scale.
      Results Three hundred and fifty-seven undergraduate nursing students(32.8%) had excellent academic performance, 462 students(42.5%) had poor academic performance, and 237 students(21.8%) had very poor academic performance.The average score of personality advantage and time management was(3.54±0.38) points and(3.36±0.40) points, respectively; the total score of negative life event and social support was(26.16±22.45) points and(36.00±5.73) points, respectively.There were significant differences in the scores of personality advantage and all dimensions of time management, learning pressure and adaptation dimension of negative life event, and subjective support dimension of social support among undergraduate nursing students with different academic performance(P < 0.05).Logistic regression analysis showed that the five factors of vitality, willpower, time monitoring view, learning pressure and subjective support were statistically significant(P < 0.05).The fitting indexes of Mplus mediation model were χ2=17.51, P < 0.01, CFI=0.984, TLI=0.962, RMSEA=0.042, SRMR=0.079, which indicated that the fitting indexes of the model were good and the model was acceptable.
      Conclusions Outstanding vitality and willpower quality, good time management skill, appropriate learning pressure, more peer and family support can promote the improvement of nursing students′ academic performance.
