Effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy on the self-efficacy, mindfulness level and quality of life in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    • Objective To investigate the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Methods Ninety-four patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were divided into the observation group(mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy) and control group(conventional therapy) by random number table method (47 cases in each group). Two groups were treated continuously for 3 months. The lung function, 6-min walking distance (6MWD), self-efficacy, mindfulness level and quality of life before and after intervention, and satisfaction after intervention were compared between two groups.
Results After 3 months of intervention, the levels of PEF, FVC, FEV1%, and 6MWD in the observation group were significantly higher than those in control group(P < 0.05).The scores of all dimensions of self-efficacy in the observation group were significantly higher than those of control group(P < 0.01), and the self-efficacy in two groups after intervention was higher than before intervention(P < 0.05 to P < 0.01).After the intervention, the WHO-QOL-BRAF scores and total scores in the observation group were higher than those in control group(P < 0.01), and the scores and total scores in two groups were significantly higher than before intervention(P < 0.01).
Conclusions The application of mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can effectively improve the lung function and mindfulness level and exercise ability, enhance patients' self-efficacy, improve quality of life and patients' satisfaction.
