Removal of acoustic neuroma via suboccipito-retrosigmoid approach by microsurgery:an analysis of 42 cases

    • Objective:To investigate the feasibility of removing the acoustic neuromas via suboccipito-retrosigmoid approach by microsurgery. Methods:The acoustic neuromas in 42 patients were removed by microsurgy via suboccipito-retrosigmoid approach. Results:The tumors were totally removed in 34 cases and partly removed in 8 cases.Anatomic preservation of the facial nerve was achieved in 33 cases and functional preservation in 22 cases (House GradeⅠ-Ⅱ) at discharge. All the cases were followed up for an average of 5 years. The result was good in 29 cases, fair in 10 and poor in 3.Conclusions:It is safe and effective to remove the acoustic neurcoma via suboccipito-retrosigmoid approach using microsurgical technique.
