Effect of family function on nutrition intervention of type 2 diabetic patients in community

    • Objective:To explore the effect of family function on improvement in fasting blood glucose and dietary behaviors of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in community by nutrition intervention. Methods:Comprehensive nutrition interventions(nutrition education-dietary guide-nutrition counseling) led by public dietitian were carried out on 58 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in community, and the fasting blood glucose level was measured. The changes of dietary behaviors were assessed by self-designed dietary behavior questionnaire, and the family function was assessed by APGAR scale. Results:The 58 subjects in the study had average scores of 7.222.47 in APGAR.Thirty-four subjects were in good family function group with APGAR scores of 9.001.30,which accounted for 58.6%,19 subjects were in moderate dysfunction group with APGAR scores of 5.210.71,accounted for 32.8% and 5 subjects were in severe dysfunction group with APGAR scores of 2.800.45,accounted for 8.6%.There were no significant differences in age, sex, education, diabetes duration, height, weight and BMI in different groups(P>0.05).After nutrition intervention, the scores of dietary behaviors were increased significantly than those before intervention in all groups(P<0.01).There were significant differences in the scores change of dietary behaviors in different groups(P<0.05).The fasting blood glucose changes were decreased significantly after intervention in good family function group(P<0.05),but no significances before and after intervention in moderate dysfunction group and severe dysfunction group(P0.05).There were significant differences in the fasting blood glucose changes in different groups(P<0.05).Conclusions:Family supporting contributes to nutrition therapy for diabetic patients, improvement of family function is required for nutrition intervention on type 2 diabetes in community.
