    Clinical application of the extraperitoneal colostomy for low rectal carcinomas

    • Objective: To summarize the experience of application of exraperitoneal colostomy for low rectal carcinomas.Methods: The data of 42 patients with low rectal carcinoma treated by extraperitoneal colostomy were analyzed retrospectively.Results: The operation for all patients were successful.Forty patients undergoing extraperitoneal colostomy were followed up from 6 to 42 months.Only one of them suffered from colostomy stenosis.The morbidity of complications caused by colostomy was 2.5 and 35 patients(87.5) got continence colostomies.The complications of the traditional Mile's operation were 20.6(21 patients),and 28 patients(27.5) got continence colostomies.There was significant difference in the continence and the occurrence of the complications between the two groups(P<0.01).Conclusions: This operation has the advantages of simple manipulation,less complications,better defecation function and easy nursing.It is a safe and effective for treatment of low carcinoma of rectum.
