Research on the effects of different airway humidification on patients receiving tracheotomy

    • Objective: To compare the effects of different humidification on patients receiving tracheotomy. Methods: Forty patients receiving tracheotomy were randomly divided into two groups,20 patients in each. The control group were given conventional humidification, and the experimental group were administered necessary humidification after evaluation of the sputamentum. The outcome was compared between the two groups. Results: The effects of the experiment group were superior to that of the control (P<0.01).The occurrence of irritating coughs and mucous membrane hemorrhages in the experimental group were lower than that in the normal control (P<0.05 to P<0.01).The times of aspiration of sputum in the experimental group were less than those of the normal control (P<0.01).Conclusions: It is reasonable and safe to administer humidification volume after evaluation of the sputamentum, which may decrease the times of aspiration of sputum and lighten the nurses' workload.
