Open heart surgery for children under 10 kg: A report of 54 cases

Objective: To investigate the curative effect and the time for surgical treatment of the congenital heart disease for patients with weight under 10 kg.Methods: Fifty-four cases whose weight was under 10 kg and who had received surgical treatment for ventricular septal defect(VSD),atrial septal defect(ASD),tetralogy of Fallot(TOF) or total anomalous pulmonary venous connection(TAPVC) were analysed retrospectively.Results: Fifty-two suvived.The most common complications were respiratory infection;2 died.One to 20 months' follow-up showed that 50 patients were in good condition;one case had residual shunt and chronic malfunction of the heart;another had non-sinus rhythm of the heart.Conclusions: Optimum time for surgical treatment of congenital heart disease for children with light weight can ensure a better result.
