    The personality and behavior traits in psychiatric disorders associated with epilepsy

    • Objective:To understand the personality and behavior traits in patients with epileptic psychiatric disorders.Methods:Thirty-eight patients with epileptic psychiatric disorders(observation group)and 39 healthy adults(control group) were investigated by Irrational Beliefs Scale,the Cattells Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire(16PF),the Barret Impulsiveness Scale and Buss-Perry Attack Scale.Results:The Irrational Beliefs Scale showed that the observation group had higher scores than the control in low frustration tolerance,generalization comments,absolute requirements and the total score(P0.01).In 16PF,the observation group had lower scores than the control in gregarious nature,intelligence,stability and excitability(P0.05 to P0.01),and higher scores in tension,sensitivity,fantasy,sophisticated and suspicion(P0.05 to P0.01),the other scores were not significantly different(P0.05).The Barret Impulsiveness Scale displayed that the observation group had higher scores than the control in plan,action,cognitive and the total score(P0.01);the Buss-Perry Attack Scale demonstrated that the observation group had higher scores than the control in anger,hostility,physical aggression,language offensive,self-attack and the total score(P0.01).Conclusions:The patients with epileptic psychiatric disorders often had irrational beliefs and behavior traits,possessing the personality trait of low intelligence,instability,suspicion,sensitivity,fantasy and non-self-discipline,comprehensive intervention therapy is necessary for psychiatric patients with epilepsy.
