    Epidemiological survey of fatty liver prevalence and its major risk factors in the workers of Shanghai postal and telecommunication company

    • Objective:To investigate the prevalence and major risk factors of fatty liver in the workers of Shanghai postal and telecommunication company.Methods:A cross-sectional survey was performed in the workers who worked in Shanghai postal and telecommunication company from January to December 2011,all kinds of examinations were done in these workers,including physical examination,liver and renal function,serum fasting blood glucose level,lipid level,uric acid level and abdominal ultrasonographic examination.Results:Fatty liver was detected with abdominal ultrasonographic examination in 6 347 workers(33.58%),including 5 114 males(45.15%) and 1 233 females(16.28%).The prevalence of fatty liver in males was significantly higher than in females(P0.01).The prevalence of fatty liver was increased with aging both in males and females.Serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level,body mass index,triglyceride level,mean age,serum fasting glucose level,ALT level,serum uric acid and diastolic blood pressure in fatty liver group were significantly higher than those in the group without fatty liver(P0.01),but high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in fatty liver group was significantly lower than in the group without fatty liver(P0.01).Conclusions:There is a high prevalence of fatty liver in the workers of Shanghai postal and telecommunication company.The prevalence of fatty liver in males is significantly higher than that in females.Obesity,diabetes,dyslipidemia,ages,hypertension and hyperuricemia are the major risk factors in nonalcoholic fatty liver.
