Establishment of model of mandibular distraction osteogenesis in rabbits

    • Objective: To establish the model of mandibular distraction osteogenesis in rabbits. Methods: Thirty white New Zealand rabbits underwent osteotomy in the right mandible. The bone stumps were repositioned and fixed with self-devised distraction equipment. After 7 days' latency period, the distraction was carried out,and the specimens were performed histology examination. Results: All the rabbits survived and were in good condition within the experiment period. The right mandible of all the rabbits was lengthened 3 mm successfully. Conclusions: Self-devised distraction equipment may be used for animal experiment, and rabbits can be established as an experimental model for study of distraction osteogenesis.
