Effects of reduced glutathione precondition on intestine suffering from congestion injury in rats

    • Objective: To study the effects of reduced glutathione(GSH)precondition on intestine suffering from congestion injury in rats. Methods: Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups(n= 10), congestion group(CG),precondition group(PG)and sham operation group(SG).All rats were anesthetized with pentobarbital. One milliliter of GSH(0.15 g /kg)was injected into rats from PG and one milliliter saline was into those from CG and SG.Then all rats underwent laparotomy and those from CG and PG also underwent blockage of port vein for 35 min. After 24 h reperfusion of intestine, blood samples were obtained for the determination of endotoxin, malondialdehyde(MDA), superoxide dismutase(SOD)and tumor necrosis factor-(TNF-); and ileac specimens were for histological examination.Corresponding specimens from normal rats were also obtained as normal controls. Results: All samples and specimens from SG and normal rats were basically normal. But for those from CG, severe injury of intestine was observed combined with significant increasing of endotoxin,MDA,TNF- and remarkable declining of SOD activity. For those from PG,however, moderate intestinal injury was observed and the level of endotoxin,MDA and TNF- were declined significantly, and SOD activity was increased when compared with those parameters in CG(P<0.01).Conclusions: GSH precondition can produce protective effects on intestine suffering from congestion injury in rats.
