Role of capsule endoscopy in diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases:report of 56 cases

Abstract
Objective:To discuss the value of capsule endoscopy in diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases.Methods:Fifty-six patients received the capsule endoscope examination.The clinical data,executive rate,positive detection rate in the respective parts of the digestive tract and positive rate of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and other abdominal symptoms were analyzed; The diagnostic value of the capsule endoscope was also assessed.Results:The capsule endoscope examination was completed in 54 of the 56 patients.Pathologic lesions were observed in all the 54 cases.Esophagus and stomach changes were found in 1 case(1.8%),pure stomach changes in 15 cases (27.8%) and stomach and small bowel pathological changes in 38 cases.The detection rates were 1.8%,27.8%and (70.4%).Out of the 19 patients with obscure gastroinstestinal bleeding and 18 out of the 31 patients with abdominal symptoms were proved to have small intestine lesions; the detection rates were 73.7% and 58.1%,respectively.Of the 6 patients with no symptoms,one was confirmed to have reflux esophagitis and 5 had superficial gastritis.Among the 26 elderly patients,one had retained capsule in the stomach and the others went through the capsule endoscopy examination.Conclusions:The capsule endoscopy is effective in detecting intestinal diseases and diagnosis of stomach disorders.It has the advantages of nice compliance.
