Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of glimepiride and metformin therapy on metabolic syndrome (MS).Methods: Sixty-eight patients with MS were randomly assigned to receive glimepiride or metformin. The fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C), triglycerides (TG), fasting insulin levels (FIn) and the values of body mass index (BMI) of the two groups were compared before and after treatment. Results: FBG, PBG, HbA1C and FIn decreased significantly in the two groups (P<0.01), but FIn decreased more obviously in the glimepiride group (P<0.01).TG level and BMI decreased significantly in the two groups (P<0.01).Conclusions: Both glimepiride and metformin can improve the glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism.Glimepiride is more effective than metformine in improveing IR and insulin sensitiviry.
