Objective To investigate the current status of kidney disease burden, mental health and self-compassion among peritoneal dialysis patients, and to explore the mediating effect of self-compassion between kidney disease burden and mental health.
Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 172 peritoneal dialysis patients undergoing outpatient follow-up. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, the Mental Component Summary of the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), the kidney disease burden module of the 36-item Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-36) and the Self-Compassion Scale.
Results Peritoneal dialysis patients scored 84.00 (79.00, 93.75) on the self-compassion scale, 75.00 (56.25, 87.50) on the kidney disease burden scale, and 43.75 (36.63, 48.23) on the mental health scale. Self-compassion exerted a partial mediating effect between disease burden and mental health. Self-compassion had a partial mediating effect between disease burden and mental health, with its mediating effect accounting for 18.29% of the total effect (indirect effect = –0.032, 95%CI: –0.062 to –0.003).
Conclusion Patients receiving peritoneal dialysis have low levels of mental health and self-compassion and a high level of perceived disease burden. Clinical interventions targeting self-compassion should be implemented to alleviate the adverse effects of disease burden on mental health among peritoneal dialysis patients.
