Choice of therapy for recurrent ovarian cancer

    • Objective: To investigate the choice of treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer. Methods: The clinical pathological data of 50 cases of recurrent ovarian cancer from January 2000 to December 2005 were analyzed. The cases were divided into three groups according to the conditions of their first treatment, the interval time before recurrence, the site, size and number of the recurrent focus, and the patients' general conditions. The three groups were treated by second reductive surgery and postoperative secondline chemotherapy, intravenous chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy, respectively. Results: The survival rate of 1,2,3,4 and 5-year for the 50 patients was 82%,64%,42%,34%,and 30% respectively.Of the three methods, the 1-year and 3-year survival rate had no statistical difference(P>0.05),but the 5-year survival rate was significantly different(P<0.05).Conclusions: Treatment for the recurrent ovarian cancer should be individualized. The second reductive surgery should be selected carefully and evaluated cautiously, which may improve the optimal cytoreductive rate and the patients'life quality.
