Relationship between intima media thickness of carotid and coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Objective: To observe the relations between intima media thickness(IMT) of common carotid and coronary heart disease in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods: One hundrend and twenty-four type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with coronary heart diseases including 60 cases of SAP and 64 cases of UAP(group A),58 patients without coronary heart diseases as manifested by CAG(group B) and 133 healthy subjects were enrolled in our study.The IMT of the 3 groups was observed with high resolution ultrasound,and the levels of blood pressure,plasma glucose and blood lipids were measured as well.The factors affecting IMT were analyzed.Results: The IMT in the 3 groups was statistically different(P<0.01).Gensini and IMT in both UAP and SAP groups had no statistical differences(P>0.05).The rate of unstable carotid plaque of all patients in UAP group was higher than that in SAP group(P<0.0167)Conclusions: Ultrasonography could determine the IMT of carotid and carotid plaque,so it is of great value in predicting coronary heart diseases in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients.
