Abstract
Objective: To explore the diagnosis and treatment value of visual evoked potential(VEP) for patients with optic nerve contusion following ocular damage. Methods: VEP detection was performed in 36 patients with optic nerve contusion, and the result was compared with that of the contralateral healthy eyes and the normal control group. Results: VEP was determined in 40 eyes of 36 patients.Simple decrease of amplitude was found in 30 eyes of 28 patients and decrease of amplitude accompanied by the prolongation of latency in 8 eyes of 7 patients. There was significant difference in amplitudes of P100 among the damaged eyes, the contralateral healthy eyes and the normal group(P<0.001 and P<0.01).But the prolongation of latency of P100 was found in 7 patients. The difference was significant as compared with the healthy eyes(P<0.001),but no significant difference was noted in the latency of P100 as compared with the normal control group(P>0.05).Conclusions: VEP is sensitive in the detection of optic nerve contusion following ocular damage. It is of value in early diagnosis and prognosis of optic nerve contusion following ocular damage.
