Significance of change of thyroid hormone in the serum of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Objective: To observe the change of thyroid hormone in the serum of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) at the acute stage and the stationary phase.Methods: The levels of T₃,FT₃,T₄,FT₄ and TSH in the serum of 39 patients with COPD were detected before treatment and two weeks after treatment,and the results were compared with those of the controls.Results: The levels of T₃,FT₃,T₄ in the serum of patients with COPD were lower than those of the controls(P<0.01).After treatment,the above levels decreased significantly in 36 cases(P<0.01),but did not in 3 severe cases.Conclusions: The dynamic change of thyroid hormone in the serum of patients with COPD is of value for the judgment of the prognosis of the patients.
